Governor Paterson, delivering a speech today at the NAACP’s 99th annual convention at Cincinnati , suggested that the defeat of Senator Obama in the presidential election would be a victory for racism in America .

Mr. Paterson, a former lieutenant governor whose sudden rise to power following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer has led the press to dub him the “accidental governor,” said he is offended by the label and suggested that it was motivated by racism.
Mr. Paterson, who supported Senator Clinton throughout her campaign and was a Clinton super-delegate before endorsing Mr. Obama after Mrs. Clinton conceded, cast the presidential race in stark racial terms, saying its outcome would decide whether the nation could finally move beyond its legacy of slavery and segregation.
“Can America reject the crucible of race that has dictated and pervaded all of our history to embrace an African American man who has the right polices for the next decade in this country? Can America overlook its past practices that were so grave that in 1820 the great Scottish Whig, Sydney Smith, writing in the Edinburgh Review, said of America : ‘How can they protest the tyrannies of Europe when they torture and brutalize one-sixth of its population?’ How can America United States ?” Mr. Paterson said. get past this and elect an African-American president of the
He continued: “Can America go past the crippling way that we’ve shot ourselves in the foot over and over, denying opportunity to people who are bright, to people who are qualified, to people who are able because they didn’t look like us, or they didn’t come from where we came from, or they are from a different gender, or they are from the African continent? Can America push that away and find new leadership? We’ll find out in the next few months what America can do.”
Mr. Paterson, who is New York’s first black governor, also turned the focus on himself, strongly suggesting that people have belittled his governorship not because of the unusual way in which he took office but because of his race.

“I am known as New York ’s accidental governor. I would like to point out a couple of facts: The two adjoining states to New York , New Jersey and Connecticut , have had three government changes in the last five years,” he said.

The vocals reminded me instantly of Elliott Smith, but the music accompanying them was something different…more ambient and definitely more complex than Elliott’s barebones style.
I urge you as strongly as my fingers can type to check out Goliath, With You In Quiet Space and Corner Pt. 1 on the band’s MySpace page. It’s the kind of luscious, layered music that’s great for lounging and pondering life on a patio. Just perfect downtempo music for a lazy afternoon. I was raised as a Christian and went to a fundamentalist Bible believing church. I made a profession of faith to Jesus in 1969. In all of my years as growing up Christian, I read and studied the Bible regularly. Later on, I enlisted in the US Marines and led Bible studies with my troops. In 1988, I started my own church reaching out with a special Spanish ministry to the Hispanics. In 1990, I got out of the Marines and joined the US Navy reserves.
In 1991, I was ordered to active duty for operation Desert Storm. I remember being impressed with the Arabs worshipping 5 times a day and I never forgot about hearing the Athan (call to prayer) 5 times a day over the many loud speakers in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. I purchased several prayer rugs while I was there.
As I continued in my Christian faith, when I got home, I started to become unsettled regarding it. I went to several different churches and faiths over the years and studied their doctrines. I studied and read the book of Mormon quite a bit and became fascinated with the Mormons. However, I eventually found many conflicts between the Bible and the book of Mormon.

I later joined a 7th Adventist Church and thought this was the true path. I studied and read several of Ellen G. White’s books concerning the 4th commandment of keeping the Saturday Sabbath. However, I eventually saw some conflicts between the Bible and one of Ellen G. White’s vision of heaven.
I stayed home from all churches after that and got a job working for the Kansas City Star newspaper. I started to feel a drawing to the Islamic faith after about 4 weeks of reading it daily.

On a side note, my wife has become upset with me over my conversion and has been trying to get me to renounce Islam. I tell her I can never turn my back on God and continue to lead a humble Muslim life before her and being patient with her in the hopes of her one day embracing Islam. It was the last Tri-Valley League track meet of the season. Bellingham at Holliston. Paul Taddeo threw the shot put and discus for Bellingham. The discus was his specialty. His personal best had been 111 feet. To qualify for the state divisional meet this weekend, Taddeo had to do 120 feet or better.
He had three attempts. The first two throws were all right, but not good enough to qualify for the state divisionals. He had one throw left. The pressure must have been stifling.
“Yes it was,” says Taddeo. “But when I go up and throw, I just block everything out.”
He released the discus. It felt right. But there was no way of knowing for sure. Maybe his mind was playing tricks. “I could tell by the tightness of the throw it was looking good,” says Taddeo. It measured 123 feet, 8 inches. “I ran around with my hands up, and got the discus.”

The examining physician sent Taddeo to a urologist. The appointment was on a Tuesday. The surgery was on Friday. The teenager had testicular cancer. “It was kind of surreal,” he says. “What would we do from here? I’d have to deal with it.”
The surgery was at MetroWest Medical Center, Natick. As soon as Taddeo woke up, they sent him home. He would miss his sophomore year of track. “That was pretty tough.”
Even tougher was the chemotherapy, which started in the summer of 2006. “The first round wasn’t bad at all, just some bad taste in my mouth,” says Taddeo. “The second round was a little tougher. Third round, I felt terrible. I had no energy.” He just laid there in his room at Children’s Hospital, wondering.

He missed the last week of school. The last blast of chemo was in July. The football season was approaching. He was a lineman for the Blackhawks, 6-foot-2, 230 pounds. “I honestly didn’t think I’d wind up playing football that year,” he says. “I missed captain’s practices and preseason practices because my white blood cell count was low.”
But he stayed with it. Nobody said it’d be easy. “The first two weeks of practice were the roughest. I wasn’t as conditioned as the other kids. I missed out on weight training.”
He didn’t see much action that season. But it was better than not playing at all, not being a part of the team. “I was happy with my playing time. Coach would say ‘Hey Paul, go in for so-and-so.’ I’d go in and do my best.”
“It’s an amazing story,” says Bellingham football coach Ted Rigney. “He earned a spot on the team.”
What Taddeo endured just to suit up on Friday nights was testimony of the boy’s character. He wasn’t going to be a starter. Rigney figured it take a special kid to go through what Taddeo did, knowing he’d be a bit player.
“It was devastating when we heard (about the cancer),” says Rigney. “He’s one of the best-liked kids on the team. Definitely a role model.”

“At first I was a little nervous that I’d get the ball kicked at me and I wouldn’t get it and the other team would,” he recalls. “Thank God that didn’t happen.”
Xenos found out about Taddeo’s cancer from his friends. “He didn’t make a big deal of it. He’s got a great heart, really.”
A coach can only work with an athlete so much. Teach him technique. Show and tell him things he doesn’t know. Lend encouragement. “But you can’t give kids hearts,” says Xenos. “Paul doesn’t need a lot of motivation.”
Taddeo’s personality makes him impossible not to like. “He’s a little kid in a big person’s body,” says Xenos.

Chefs Just Ducking Around at the D’Artagnan Duckathlon
The city’s top restaurants represented in full force yesterday at D’Artagnan’s Fourth Annual Duckathlon, a culinary competition where chefs tackle food-related and often wacky challenges throughout the Chelsea Market and Meatpacking District.
Teams from Anissa, Craft, Craftsteak, Oceana, DB Bistro Moderne, Chanterelle and Gothamist’s own Mother Duckers followed the duckprints around the neighborhood while guessing the weight of a suckling pig, matching testicles to their animal owners (pictured above), frantically flipping crêpes, and humiliating themselves doing the “Saucisson Fan-Dangle” in front of Florentâs brunch crowd, a feat that involved wearing both a dangling sausage and a hoop skirt while squatting over a milk jug.
